Question to Menas Kafatos:
Discussing the workings of the brain, you write that its chemistry is completely predetermined, while thinking is free. In understanding how the two relate, you believe that a great universal secret can be revealed.
What is this secret and can it help us understand and better navigate the freedom-determinism aspect of our life?
You cannot have freedom or free choice in a mechanical universe. Only in the quantum universe. In fact, free choice is very much a part and parcel of the quantum view. Chemistry is predetermined, actually not completely as chemistry itself is based on the quantum universe, while choices are free. An interesting complementarity between determinism and uncertainty is at play here.
